How do they resize a ring
Resizing a ring at Mulloys Fine Jewelry, or any reputable jeweler, typically involves the following steps:
- Consultation: The first step is to consult with the jeweler to determine the correct size needed. The jeweler will measure your finger size using a specialized ring sizer tool or mandrel to ensure an accurate fit.
- Assessment: The jeweler will assess the ring to determine if it can be resized without compromising its structural integrity or appearance. Some rings, especially those with intricate designs, may be more challenging to resize.
- Sizing Up or Down: Depending on whether you need the ring to be larger or smaller, the jeweler will take the appropriate action:
- Sizing Down: If the ring needs to be made smaller, the jeweler will cut out a small section of the shank (the bottom part of the ring) and solder the ends back together. The excess metal is then removed, and the ring is polished to restore its appearance.
- Sizing Up: If the ring needs to be made larger, the jeweler may cut the shank and add a piece of metal to it. This new section is soldered to the existing ring, and any excess metal is removed before polishing.
- Reshaping and Refinishing: After the resizing is done, the jeweler will reshape the ring to ensure it's perfectly round and even. Any scratches, marks, or imperfections on the ring's surface will be polished or refinished to restore its original appearance.
- Stone Setting: If the ring has gemstones, the jeweler will carefully re-set them after resizing to ensure they are secure and properly aligned.
- Final Inspection: The resized ring undergoes a final inspection to ensure it meets the desired size, quality, and appearance standards. The jeweler will check for any visible imperfections, ensure the stones are secure, and verify that the ring size matches the requested size.
- Client Approval: You, as the customer, will be asked to inspect the resized ring and ensure you are satisfied with the result. If any adjustments are necessary, they will be made at this stage.
- Pick-Up: Once you are satisfied, you can pick up your resized ring.
